old-timer wisdom (feet and rib cage)

[old-timer] ... if you find yourself outside during winter, without shoes, and need to warm your feet ... find a cow lying down and make her move ... the ground under her will be warm and you can stand there to get out of the snow ... or you can find a fresh cow patty and stand in the middle of it ... that will really warm your feet ...

... if you shoot up a coyote, and it's not quite dead, and you are out of ammo ... step on its rib cage ... that'll kill it.

(how does a coyote kill a calf? ... by the ankle and the guts)

Water start flowing again in Magdalena
jun 27, 2013

“We have some water in our lines,” said village mayor Sandy Julian. “People are thinking that we’re dry completely. We’re not. We have some water. We don’t have as much as we used to. We’re only pumping 50,000 gallons a day.”

Rehab work on an old village well is expected to start next week, then engineers plan to re-drill the well that’s providing a trickle now.

New Mexico Judge Finds Speed Cameras Violate Due Process
jun 26, 2013

A New Mexico district court judge last month found the hearings offered to recipients of red light camera and speed camera tickets in the city of Las Cruces violated due process. Dona Ana County Presiding Judge Manuel I. Arrieta issued a 31-page ruling after having the issue under his consideration for nearly two-and-a-half years.

"The problem is that the videos and the photographs alone do not implicate appellant in any violation; at most they demonstrate that it is appellant's vehicle in the picture due to the license plate information," Judge Arrieta ruled.

Certificate of occupancy

A certificate of occupancy is a document issued by a local government agency or building department certifying a building's compliance with applicable building codes and other laws, and indicating it to be in a condition suitable for occupancy.[1]

The purpose of obtaining a certificate of occupancy is to prove that, according to the law, the house or building is in livable condition. Generally, such a certificate is necessary to be able to occupy the structure for everyday use, as well as to be able to sign a contract to sell the space and close on a mortgage for the space.

e: ... i just killed my first snake ...

... i then slowly walked around and back to take a better look ... and sure enough, it was a snake ... looked like diamonds on the back ... with a nice cool breeze blowing ... if i were a snake, i'd be out too ...

... i've never actually killed a snake before ... but i'd heard about it ... and the perfect tool was standing there just four feet away ... a wildland's firefighter tool called a mcleod ... which is like a large hoe on one side and a large hard rake on the other ...

... i don't know why i was so careful to just cut off the head ... what if i had missed? ... anyway, i approached the snake from it's tail side and reached forward with the mcleod ... flat blade down ... and chopped down ... chopping it's head off ... looked like just the top two inches ... the whole body just jumped and squirmed a bunch ...

... i will wait until the morning to take a better look.

Barbra Streisand - One Voice

I could never imagine myself wanting to sing in public again, but then, I could never imagine with all our advanced technology the starvation of bodies and minds and the possibility of nuclear winters in our lives - I could no longer remain silent, by my silence I was giving consent to the madness of nations spending billions of dollars on weapons that can never be used - and all at the expense of our schools, our farms, medical research and research into safe sources of energy. Sometimes we forget the importance of one voice, of each of our voices, and the enormous difference it can make in all our lives - in history. I feel I must sing again to do what I can to insure a safer and better world. That's the message, please join me on September 6th, at my home, under the stars, we'll have dinner, watch the sunset, share the music and send the message. I'd really like you to come.

US government collecting huge number of phone records
jun 6, 2013

The government has been secretly collecting the telephone records of millions of U.S. customers of Verizon under a top secret court order [Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court], according to the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said Thursday that the top secret court order for telephone records is a three-month renewal of an ongoing practice.

The NSA had no immediate comment. The agency is sensitive to perceptions that it might be spying on Americans. In a brochure it distributes, which includes a DVD for reporters to view video that it provides for public relations purposes, it pledges that the agency "is unwavering in its respect for U.S. laws and Americans' civil liberties - and its commitment to accountability," and says, "Earning the American public's trust is paramount."

The law on which the order explicitly relies is the "business records" provision of the USA Patriot Act.

U.S. Debt Continues to Grow
aug 10, 2012

The fiscal gap is the present value difference between projected future spending and revenue.

The U.S. fiscal gap, calculated using the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) realistic long-term budget forecast -- the Alternative Fiscal Scenario -- is now $222 trillion [2012]

Last year, it was $211 trillion [2011].The $11 trillion difference -- this year's [2012] true federal deficit -- is 10 times larger than the official deficit ...

In 2003 and 2004 ... fiscal gaps of $60 trillion and $86 trillion, respectively.

Police can collect DNA from arrestees, [US Supreme Court] court says
jun 3, 2013

A sharply divided [US] Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for police to take a DNA swab from anyone they arrest for a serious crime, endorsing a practice now followed by more than half the states as well as the federal government.

But the four dissenting justices said the court was allowing a major change in police powers, with conservative Justice Antonin Scalia predicting the limitation to "serious" crimes would not last.

Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler agreed that there's nothing stopping his state from expanding DNA collection from those arrested for serious crimes to those arrested for lesser ones like shoplifting.
