i just killed my first snake

e: ... i just killed my first snake ...

... it was about 15 minutes before dark, when everything is blue and invisible ... i was returning from the barn and had just entered the ranch house gate ... when i spotted a black zig-zag shadow on the ground to my right ... i jerk-jumped to the left ...

... i then slowly walked around and back to take a better look ... and sure enough, it was a snake ... looked like diamonds on the back ... with a nice cool breeze blowing ... if i were a snake, i'd be out too ...

... i've never actually killed a snake before ... but i'd heard about it ... and the perfect tool was standing there just four feet away ... a wildland's firefighter tool called a mcleod ... which is like a large hoe on one side and a large hard rake on the other ...

... i don't know why i was so careful to just cut off the head ... what if i had missed? ... anyway, i approached the snake from it's tail side and reached forward with the mcleod ... flat blade down ... and chopped down ... chopping it's head off ... looked like just the top two inches ... the whole body just jumped and squirmed a bunch ...

... i will wait until the morning to take a better look.

jun 15, 2013 update

e: ... ah damn ... i killed the friendly bull snake that i've heard [the rancher] tell stories about ... he lived under the porch ... damn ... i opened the mouth and there were no fangs ... the diamonds on his back were actually octagons ... and his head wasn't a diamond ... damn ... sorry fella.
