(updated) prediction: Pope Benedict XVI will die soon

[cnn news story feb 12 2013]
Pope's resignation was not forced by health issues, spokesman say

... it was a "spiritual" decision [Rev. Federico Lombardi]

"He will hold a final audience in Vatican City's St. Peter's Square on February 27, the day before he officially steps down, Lombardi said."

It's the first time a pope has stood down in nearly 600 years. [cnn]

While not quite unprecedented, Benedict's resignation is certainly historic. The last pope to step down before his death was Gregory XII, who in 1415 quit to end a civil war within the church in which more than one man claimed to be pope. [cnn]

is something that historic unfolding right now? ... antipope? ...

antipope

"antipope, in the Roman Catholic church, one who opposes the legitimately elected bishop of Rome, endeavours to secure the papal throne, and to some degree succeeds materially in the attempt."

"The elections of several antipopes are greatly obscured by incomplete or biased records ..."

"... it is generally conceded that there were at least 37 (antipopes) from 217 to 1439."

[brother] adds: remember the controversial events surrounding his [Pope Benedict XVI] appointment? ... the "white smoke, black smoke" confusion when John Paul passed ... very strange ...

he can't just say he has something better to do ... every day he is walking the streets the religion is at peril, right? ... what would happen to Catholicism if the former pope got busted doing ... [anything]?

"It seems unimaginable that one could continue to use a communication tool so popular and powerful during the 'sede vacante' period," Vatican Radio said, referring to the time during which the seat will be empty.

It's not yet clear whether whoever is chosen to succeed Benedict, who cited the frailty of age as the reason for his departure, will also use Twitter to reach out to some of the 1.5 billion Roman Catholics around the world. [cnn]

On February 10, the day before the pope announced his shock resignation, @Pontifex tweeted: "We must trust in the mighty power of God's mercy. We are all sinners, but His grace transforms us and makes us new." (did the antipope just confess?)
