"Blind Willie McTell"

For the song, Dylan, seated at the piano and accompanied by Mark Knopfler on the twelve-string acoustic guitar, sings a series of plaintive verses depicting allegorical scenes which reflect on the history of American music and slavery. Each verse ends with the same refrain: "Nobody can sing the blues like Blind Willie McTell".

Blind Willie McTell by Bob Dylan
lyrics

Seen the arrow on the doorpost
Saying, “This land is condemned
All the way from New Orleans
To Jerusalem”
I traveled through East Texas
Where many martyrs fell
And I know no one can sing the blues
Like Blind Willie McTell

Well, I heard that hoot owl singing
As they were taking down the tents
The stars above the barren trees
Were his only audience
Them charcoal gypsy maidens
Can strut their feathers well
But nobody can sing the blues
Like Blind Willie McTell

See them big plantations burning
Hear the cracking of the whips
Smell that sweet magnolia blooming
See the ghosts of slavery ships
I can hear them tribes a-moaning
Hear that undertaker’s bell
Nobody can sing the blues
Like Blind Willie McTell

There’s a woman by the river
With some fine young handsome man
He’s dressed up like a squire
Bootlegged whiskey in his hand
There’s a chain gang on the highway
I can hear them rebels yell
And I know no one can sing the blues
Like Blind Willie McTell

Well, God is in His heaven
And we all want what’s His
But power and greed and corruptible seed
Seem to be all that there is
I’m gazing out the window
Of the St. James Hotel
And I know no one can sing the blues
Like Blind Willie McTell

e: ... "nobody can sing the blues like Blind Willie McTell" ... makes perfect sense ... yes, cocaine leads to heroin ... (the allegorical story) ... but, the reason blind willie mctell tells it (the narrative) best ... is that he is all heart ... no pollution ... isolation ... separation ... objective interpretation ... by blind willie mctell ...

... my horoscope for today ..."Your ability to resist pressure is making waves today" ...

... i got an invite to another farm party ... it's sure to be awesome ... but i passed ...

... reason? ... the horoscope ... my isolation ... and blind willie mctell ...
--------------------------------------
e: ... [my brother] called yesterday ... he told me all about the boston lock down and tv coverage ... the hysteria ... all of which i am protected from out here at the ranch ... with no tv ... no radio ... my thoughts driving my searches ... my analysis connecting the dots ...

... i believe we are at that moment where the police state will be revealed to the american public ... be shown all that has changed over the past 12 years ...

... for this reason, i am staying isolated ... separated ... i don't want to risk hearing popular opinion ... and the selling points ... i am staying focused and pure ... all heart ...

... i will be blind willie mctell.
