e: ... it has suddenly become necessary to pet the feral mama cat in order to save her life ...
... mama cat had another litter ... 5 more ... so now we have mama cat, papa cat, 4 kittens from last august, plus 5 more ...
... i told the rancher ... he found a rescue ranch for cats and birds ... they said they would help me, but that the cats need to be socialized in order to have a chance for adoption ...
... so the plan is to pet the 5 new kittens, plus mama cat ... and to move them to the rescue ranch first ... then we'll deal with papa cat and the 4 kittens from last august (camo, furface, milky, and the dark one) ...
... the good news is that we are already petting mama cat and the new kittens ...
... a couple of days ago, mama cat was sitting on a chair on the front porch, and when i approached, she did her normal angry hissing, but did not run ... so i just reached down and pet her ... and her eyes got huge ... she didn't know what to make of that ... so she hissed again, but didn't run ... so i reached down and pet her again ... and she was again shocked that i would dare do such a thing ... so she kind of walked off with this look of violation on her face ...
... well, the rancher came out to the ranch later that day and i told him the story ... about needing to socialize mama cat ... and her not running when i pet her ...
...so he goes and finds mama cat in her cat condo with the 5 new kittens ... and he starts talking to her ... he tells her he loves her ... then he reaches up and starts petting her ... and mama cat is hissing and hissing ... and the rancher is talking calmly and whispering to her ... and he just keeps on petting her ... and even when she would spit and really look like she was about to lunge and attack ... he just kept on petting her ... head to tail ... talking sweetly to her ...
... it was quite a show ... the trick being you can't flinch when she hisses ...
... so now i am trying to pet mama cat and the kittens every couple of hours, so that they can go to the rescue ranch and have a chance for adoption ... she still hisses, but i just keep petting her like the rancher did ... and don't flinch ...
... rancher says he would like a few of them back after they are fixed, for rodent control ... wouldn't it be something if mama cat came back here fixed and friendly.
